#MUGBOT
Last week we dropped off some coffee at IO House Seattle, to upgrade the testing of their under construction #MUGBOT. We wouldn't leave without a demo. After some bribery, Oswald finally agreed. We tweeted Mugbot, and it brewed us a fresh cup of #DelSol.

Ethiopia Source Trip: December 2010
In December 2010, Caffé Vita's lead trainer, Andy Kent, traveled to Ethiopia to work on a project to trace coffee from the country from Farm to Cup. During this important traceability project, Andy visited the Homacho Farm in the Sidama region (about 4 hours drive south of Addis Ababa). Enjoy the scenes and the music...

Caffe Vita Farm Direct, Gayo River 2009
We just returned from a remarkable trip to the Gayo Mountain region of Northern Sumatra. For several years Vita has been buying large quantities of exceptional coffee from a revered cooperative in the Lake Tawar area. On this trip our green coffee buyer Mason Sager was able to visit individual plots within the co-op, bring back detailed notes and samples, and focus our buying specifically to three brilliant farms near the Gayo River. The farmers in this valley are extraordinarily dedicated to their trees and surrounding environment, their passion for organic and sustainable technique is awe inspiring and these farms are in the final stretches of obtaining Fair Trade certification. Chilies, bananas, passion fruit, papayas, and towering shade trees all grow harmoniously amongst the coffee. It is a joy and an honor to be able to bring this coffee directly from the farmers hands to you, especially given the warm reception of hospitality and generosity we experienced in Gayo. And the coffee? Hands down this is among the finest Sumatra we have ever encountered, with impeccable flavor profile, low acidity and swaggering body. A rich, aromatic cup with well balanced flavors of dark berry, vanilla, baking spice, smoke and earthiness. Accented with notes of tobacco and hops throughout the warm, comforting finish.

kids dancing and singing in ethiopia
we captured this quick song and dance number while trekking through the rift valley (the birthplace of mankind!) on our way to yirgacheffe and sidamo - caffe vita was there to find farm direct coffee - one pot was along to find out about the underlying political and social realities in this coffee rich land...

khat ceremony (also spelled chat, quat, etc)
along the koke river valley in the region of sidamo we captured a traditional khat ceremony - east africans have been chewing the green leaves and giving thanks to the heavens for this intoxicating stimulant for hundreds of years - despite the controversy surrounding khat it plays an undeniable role in the coffee industry...

caffe vita + one pot on location: guatemala
the idea is simple. caffe vita buys the best beans on the planet directly from the farmers that grow them - and they take me along to sit with, cook with, and launch into heated dialogue with the farmers, pickers, exporters. we all share a meal - and we talk about the realities of growing coffee. on the ground, in these regions... in this video we bumb and grind along back roads in guatemala - it was dicey, grueling and remarkably beautiful. ak-47s were everywhere and the tension in the air was palpable - luckily the coffee and the people were equally memorable. go to: vitaonepot.blogspot.com/ to learn more, see pics, read essays and recipes, etc.

Caffe Vita Presents: Green Bean Roasting at Home
This video was inspired by our recent source trip to Ethiopia - where coffee plays a central role in the daily culture of that magnificent land. The smell of coffee roasting permeates the little villages and the large cities - the beans are roasted by hand in almost every household, caramelized over open flames, and prepared in a traditional ceremony that has been practiced for over 1000 years. We were blown away by the reverence and respect given the bean - and thought we should pay a little homage by attempting to roast a small batch of beans in our own home. The process is relatively simple - requires a good cast-iron or steel pan - and about 15-20 minutes of attention. Vita has put some green beans up on their online store, take the below link if you would like to order some and give it a whirl. This morning we got up early and talked to the nice ladies at Martha Stewart Radio about green coffee and roasting at home - sadly we can't post the audio clip as it is a satellite radio thing - but if you are a subscriber check it out. did they know starbucks was re-training as well?
on a busy street in addis ababa ethiopia we witnessed an awesome global coincidence - the day was february 26th 2008 - the very same day starbucks shuttered its several thousand U.S. stores to re-train baristas - and half a world away the starbucks knock-off khadli's coffee had gathered its 50 or so employees (5 locations) for a similar training. same day. magical! before this was snuffed out the footage shows kaldhi's coffee and captures some of the training session underway.

caffe vita + one pot on location: brazil IIII
caffe vita farm direct source trip to carmo de minas brazil. after a long day of cooking in the farms kitchen - anna shows us the elements that go on the traditional feijoada plate - feijoada is the national dish of brazil - and seems to have first appeared in the slave camps in the early days of brazilian coffee production. the black bean stew is a rustic and redolent concoction of sausage, dried beef and just about every part of the pig imaginable. go to: vitaonepot.blogspot.com/ to learn more, see recipes, essays, etc...
